Winter Lights

Following the success of Ron Haselden's Animal,  the Winter Lights project for 2006, artist Franck Scurti was commissioned to propose a second series of Winter Lights and has created a Liverpool Jackpot for three Liverpool neighbourhoods. Franck Scurti’s investigative approach within communities and his engaging and playful artworks will find a natural home within the neighbourhoods of Liverpool. Animal will also be returning this autumn - and as well as the original 2006 lights, a fourth animal, Rabbit, will hopefully be lighting up the tower of St James’ Church in Toxteth later this year

Winter Lights is a Liverpool Biennial Learning and Inclusion project developed in collaboration with Rotunda College Kirkdale, Metal Kensington and Garston Cultural Village. Through collaborative programming, these organisations work together creating a presence for Liverpool Biennial in the neighbourhoods beyond the city centre.

There are three Jackpots to be seen in the three neighbourhoods and there are three types of image for each site: drawings relating to food (carrot, apple, banana), a body part (hand, nose, and eye) and phrases taken from British press selected in consultation with local residents.

The source of text and the commercial context of neon signage are placed alongside traditionally humorous props and loaded images with many possible translations and interpretations. Altogether these sequences appear meaningless, and it is clear they are not actually selling us anything. We have become used to a constant bombardment of commercial messages, and the work reminds us how refreshing it is to inspire our bigger ideas. The texts have been chosen by each neighbourhood and reveal this desire.

It is intended that Winter Lights 07/08 will extend the neighbourhoods' presence ‘on the map’ bringing visitors and tourists from the city centre outwards. The project will also include an engagement project within each of the neighbourhood communities.
