Sanya Kantarovsky (b. 1982, Moscow, Russia) lives and works in New York. His most well-known works – a series of unusually rich and strange figurative paintings – contain drastic shifts in scale, paint application and stylisation. The dark humour consistent in his work pits the sumptuous against the abject and thrusts both physical and psychological private space into public view. Evoking the feeling of an uneasy inner monologue, figures are gawked at, exposed, poked, or spooned medicine. They interact with one another, as well as the edges of the canvas itself, testing the confines of their given bodies and their given frame.

This two-colour woodcut print Perspectives was specially commissioned by The Serving Library in Winter 2016, for the back cover of the twelfth issue of their journal on the same theme, and produced in New York in a limited edition of 50 copies.

Sanya Kantarovsky studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and received his MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles. Recent solo exhibitions include Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy (2017); Studio Voltaire, London (2015); LAXART, Los Angeles (2014); and Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen (2013). Recent group exhibitions include: the Jewish Museum, New York (2017); the Sculpture Center, New York (2016); the 31st Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana (2015); Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe (2014); the 9th Shanghai Biennale, Shanghai (2012). Kantarovsky’s works belong to several prestigious museum collections, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Tate Modern, London; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
