John Moores Painting Prize Summit

An afternoon focusing on issues that face arts graduates and early career artists. Hear staff from the exhibitions team at the Walker Art Gallery give their take on working with galleries and listen to The Royal Standard’s view on how artist led organisations can facilitate activity after graduation. Staff from the John Moores Painting Prize will also take participants through the application process to John Moores 2014.

Introduction 1-1.20pm

John Moores Project Manager Angela Samata will introduce today’s event, with a brief history of the painting prize and insight into this year’s exhibition.

Grey Area - Navigating the gap after graduation 1.20-2.10pm

The Royal Standard will give an insight into the history of the organisation and its position within the arts ecology in Liverpool. They will also discuss how artists led organisation can facilitate activity for students after graduation.

BREAK 2.10-2.30pm

Working with galleries 2.30- 3.15pm

In this session Linda Pittwood, Exhibition Officer, National Museums Liverpool will look closely at working with galleries. It will include preparing an artists statement, pricing work and submitting exhibition proposals. Although using National Museums Liverpool as one example, the tips and approaches will apply when working with all kinds of organisations.

Applying to the John Moores painting Prize 3.15-3.45pm

Angela Samata will guide prospective 2014 John Moores Painting Prize entrants through the application process.

Conclusion 3.45-4pm Angela Samata will conclude the afternoon including an opportunity for final questions.

Prizewinner in conversation 6-7.30pm

A unique opportunity to hear Sarah Pickstone, the 2012 John Moores Painting Prize winning artist discuss her work and practice with Director of Art Galleries Sandra Penketh.

Painting: a dialogue 2-3.30pm

A panel of artists and curators will critically review the John Moores Painting Prize, past and present, discussing the challenges faced by contemporary painters and the changing role of painting within society. Sandra Penketh, Director of Art Galleries, will chair the discussion and will be joined by Andrew Bracey, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Lincoln Leo Fitzmaurice, Winner of the Northern Art Prize 2011 Sarah Pickstone, John Moores Painting Prizewinning Artist 2012 Narbi Price, John Moores Painting Prize 2012 Exhibiting Artist Magnus Quaife, artist and Director of Malgras|Naudet, Manchester
