Inter-view

Crown Street Resource Centre

For the last six years members of Mary Seacole House have been involved with the Liverpool Biennial programme through working with Windows Poetry Group (based on Bold Street) on various projects. The group met artists, did reviews of work at the Tate, had work put in catalogues and papers, attended launches and became involved with the production of the newspaper BURST.

This year Otto Karvonen has met with some of the group when we had interesting conversations about his work and how they felt Liverpool.  Further meetings were set up but were not attended so we relocated to Crown Street where we held three workshops.  The first looked at the theme of Made Up, the second, chosen due to Otto’s work around street signs, worked with these and the third asked participants to map a personal journey.

“Made Up” being the first title we may need to explain to those who do not come from Liverpool that we often use the term to express our pleasure to receive a gift or happiness at an event.  You may say “chuffed” or even ?.

In the second workshop some people chose to work within the street signs, re-naming them, others chose to be stimulated by the sign – for example Michelle’s running horse, and others let the signs lead to a story.

The last workshop of the three started with us using large pieces of paper and coloured felt tip pens to map a familiar journey, gradually we added colours, smells, sounds, tastes and feelings to these (rather attractive) pictures.  Finally we lifted the words and put them into poems.

We do hope you enjoy our contributions to this website and our reactions to the themes, some of which you will find on the blog on the interview site.
