Build Your Own ‘Manthan’
Saturday 19 July 2025, 11am – 4pm
Join the Liverpool Biennial Learning Team for a workshop inspired by 2025 artist Nandan Ghiya’s sculpture ‘Manthan’, a powerful story from Hindu mythology about mountains, oceans, and the search for something magical.
Together, we’ll build a giant version of the ‘Manthan’ scene, complete with a golden mountain, a many-headed snake, and swirling waves. As we create, we’ll think about what this story means for us today, how we treat nature, what we share, and what we hope for in the future.
Families are invited to add their own voices to the sculpture by sharing memories, stories, or drawings connected to Liverpool, migration, or home and filling it with our own stories, drawings and ideas.
Soft Protest
Saturday 26 July 2025, 11am – 4pm
Join the Liverpool Biennial Learning Team for a fun and thoughtful textile workshop inspired by Deep End, a sensory artwork by Disabled and Neurodivergent 2025 artist Amy Claire Mills. In this hands-on session, children and families will explore ideas of care, identity, and belonging through fabric, colour and texture.
Using soft, tactile materials like fabric scraps, ribbons and felt, participants will create their own patchwork-style artwork, taking inspiration from the large towel-like textile in Deep End. Together, we’ll think about the places in our lives that bring people together like swimming pools, libraries and parks and imagine what it means to make places that include everyone from the beginning.
Sacred & Silly: Crafting Your Own Symbolic Charm
Saturday 2 August 2025, 11am – 4pm
Join artist Alisha Friday the Liverpool Biennial Learning Team for a playful, hands-on workshop exploring identity, memory and imagination through craft. Inspired by Liverpool’s natural textures, stone, moss, feathers and clay and the sandstone layers beneath the city, this session invites children and families to make their own 3D symbolic charm using natural and recycled materials.
Mirror Worlds
Saturday 9 August 2025, 11am – 4pm
Join the Liverpool Biennial Learning Team for a hands-on workshop inspired by the work of 2025 artist Alice Rekab. Using plasticine, clay and mirrors, children and families will explore ideas of home, heritage and identity by creating their own mini sculptures and worlds. Inspired by family stories, traditions and the marks we leave behind, this playful session invites participants to shape their memories into clay and reflect on what makes each of us unique.
Together, we’ll reflect on family, traditions, and the things we carry with us, just like Alice whose artwork looks at heirlooms, old photographs and objects passed down through generations.
Building Blocks
Saturday 16 August 2025, 11am – 4pm
Join artist Saffron Lily and the Liverpool Biennial Learning Team for a fun, hands-on workshop for children and families at Liverpool Central Library. Inspired by the theme BEDROCK and the work of 2025 artist Cevdet Erek, this creative session invites families to explore what makes our city special and imagine how we can shape its future together. Working as a team, you’ll become architects for the day, building a giant collaborative sculpture brick by brick using drawings, colours, and words that share your memories, hopes, and ideas.
Create Your Own Sound World!
Saturday 23 August 2025, 11am – 4pm
Join artist and sound-maker Mali Draper and the Liverpool Biennial Learning Team for a sensory and hands-on workshop exploring music and sounds and the hidden layers of our city.
Mali has recorded secret sounds and vibrations in the city of Liverpool using special microphones including the sandstone BEDROCK beneath our feet, ready for us to play, remix and create dreamy soundscapes to take home!
We’ll be using iPads as musical instruments explore textures of sound and to create your very own sound piece to take home.
iPads and headphones will be provided, no experience needed
Dream City
Saturday 30 August 2025, 11am – 4pm
Join the Liverpool Biennial Learning Team for a hands-on, creative workshop where children and families will help design and build a giant map of Liverpool, not just as it is, but as it could be.
Together, we’ll think about what’s missing from the places we live and what we’d love to see. Would you add more parks or playgrounds? Homes made from recycled bricks? A music museum? A giant waterslide in the middle of the city? Using sculpture, drawing and collage, together we’ll transform the Discovery Space into a Liverpool from the future!
Inspired by the 2025 Liverpool Biennial theme BEDROCK, this workshop explores what lies at the heart of a strong community: care, connection, imagination, and a sense of belonging.
Saturday 6 September 2025, 11am – 4pm
