A co-presentation between esea contemporary and Liverpool Biennial, this special performance from Manchester-based collective Aroma Cantonese Opera Troupe with optional participation, is inspired by LB2025 artist Karen Tam's installation 'Scent of Thunderbolts' (2024).

Join us for a special outdoor performance by Aroma Cantonese Opera Troupe, inspired by Karen Tam’s installation Scent of Thunderbolts (2024) for Liverpool Biennial. Aroma Cantonese Opera Troupe—who have been leading Cantonese opera workshops at esea ArtClub—will demonstrate signature movements using traditional opera props such as water sleeves and horsewhips. Audiences are invited to join in and try the techniques in an open, guided session for those who wish to participate.

Photographs of Aroma Cantonese Opera Troupe’s performances and community engagement feature within Tam’s installation, highlighting the troupe’s vital presence in contemporary diasporic culture.

The performance will be followed by a Q&A with the troupe at Pagoda Arts. This collaboration highlights the cultural heritage of Cantonese opera and its connections to diasporic Chinese communities, and explores themes of tradition, cultural migration, and identity.

Delivered with support from Pagoda Arts and realised with the generous support of the North West Regional Strategic Migration Partnership (RSMP).
