As the final weeks of Liverpool Biennial 2023 approach, ‘The Reflective Return’ invites us to reflect on the journey of ‘uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things’ through film, live happenings, music and food.

What is The Reflective Return?

As September arrives, summoning the close of Liverpool Biennial 2023 ‘uMoya’: The Sacred Return of Lost Things, ‘The Reflective Return’ marks the final moment in this year’s public programme, offering an opportunity to reflect on the themes of Liverpool Biennial 2023. The Reflective Return proposes a moment of quiet and contemplation after the provocation of ‘uMoya’.

What’s on during The Reflective Return?

The Reflective Return – a night of sound and sonic reflection, inviting introspection and shared reflection, through film, live happenings, music and food – will take place on Saturday 9th September at Bluecoat. Facilitated and hosted by Kolade from Noire Gayze, the evening will begin with a screening of Neptune Frost (2021, Anisia Uzeyman & Saul Williams), followed by intimate drum percussion from Irvin Pascal and performances by local artists.

Delivered in collaboration with The Bluecoat and produced with support from Homotopia, The Reflective Return will also involve a listening session of ‘GREEN STAR’ (2023) by Liverpool Biennial 2023 artist Katy’taya Catitu and will conclude with a DJ set as a moment of release and departure from Liverpool Biennial 2023.

This is a free, ticketed event. To book tickets, please follow the ‘Book Now’ link on The Reflective Return event page found here: https://www.biennial.com/event/liverpool-bienni…eflective-return/

About Liverpool Biennial 2023

Liverpool Biennial 2023, ‘uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things’, is structured around a triangulation, mirroring the journeys undertaken during the Transatlantic trade of enslaved people. The three points within the Biennial- ‘The Opening Door’, ‘The Middle Passage’, and ‘The Reflective Return’- all operate to provide alternative entry points into ‘uMoya’ and its associated provocations.

The festival began in June with The Opening Door, a moment focused on live art and public installations. With the arrival of August, The Middle Passage emerged to create a transitory space from which to explore possibilities for healing and returns.  As summer draws to a close, September invites The Reflective Return, a moment for reflection and contemplation on the themes of Liverpool Biennial 2023.
