What does it mean to curate an art exhibition?
Throughout March and April, we worked with artist Angelica Vanasse and the young people at MYA SPACE on a series of workshops focused on exhibition creation and curation. In each session we focused on what curating means, the creative process, creating artworks, skillsharing and collaboration.
At the beginning of the project, we asked the group what kind of exhibition space they would like to create, inspired by the below prompts:
- How can we create a space that is welcoming for everyone involved?
- How can we make sure we all feel comfortable?
- How can we create a space where we can express ourselves, be seen, and share our stories with one another?
As the project progressed, the group tried out a variety of creative processes including printmaking, sculpture, textiles, stamp making, poster design and merchandise production, all of which contributed to the final exhibition that is displayed within their multi-purpose room at MYA SPACE.
To mark the last session the group invited their friends and other members of MYA SPACE for a celebration event – featuring (amongst other things) chocolate crispy cakes, a large portion of salt and pepper chips, a cake making station, a tote bag making area and a wall of inspiration that the young people could write their own messages on.
This series of workshops has been kindly supported by the Sedulo Foundation.
Every donation we receive, no matter how big or small, will help Liverpool Biennial to support the artists and communities we work with, to commission ground-breaking public artworks, to enable learning opportunities and to ensure we remain a Biennial for Everyone.

Visual Minutes by Laura-Kate Draws
At various points throughout the workshops we were joined by artist Laura-Kate, who worked with the young people to transform some of the narratives and questions that we explored, as well as their feedback on the project, into visual minutes.
