Liverpool Biennial is delighted to announce Big L, the second work in our Limited Editions series, created by artist Richard Woods.

Richard Woods transforms real surfaces into cartoon-like versions. His art is a mash-up of art, architecture and design; using household gloss paint, plywood and laminate to playfully transform urban buildings into mock-Tudor cottages, coating concrete pillars with chinz wallpaper, and covering floors with crazy paving in wild colours.

For Liverpool Biennial, Woods has made a very special edition titled Big L – with the L standing for Liverpool. This new work is a celebration of Innovation-Investment-Progress, his commission for the Biennial Festival in 2008. Woods created a powerful statement of positive thinking, using the interior of an iconic former DIY shop to create a repeated pattern of ‘feel-good’ logos that included words such as ‘innovation’, ‘progress’ and ‘build’, alongside a floor covered in zig-zag fake wood print. Like a visual mantra, the work saturated the visitor’s field of vision with its repeated patterns and words.

Richard Woods (b. 1966 in Chester, lives in London) has recently presented work at the Victoria & Albert Musuem, Royal Academy of Art, Bloomberg Space (all London); Turner Contemporary (Margate), Grieder Contemporary (Zurich) and Milton Keynes Gallery. In 2003, he participated in the 50th International Venice Biennale. Over the past few years, he has undertaken a number of major projects that have included an interior for iconic designers Comme des Garçons flagship store in Osaka, Japan; and the transformation of Cary Grant’s former Hollywood residence for its new owner, art dealer Jeffrey Deitch. Works by Woods are held in major collections such as the Saatchi Collection, Arts Council England and the British Museum.
