Fabien Giraud and Raphaël Siboni's collaborative practice reflects on cinema history, philosophy and technological evolution.

Fabien Giraud and Raphaël Siboni’s commission for Liverpool Biennial 2016, 1922 – The Uncomputable, is the most recent in their series The Unmanned, which recounts a history of technology in reverse. The Unmanned includes an account of the Earth’s dismantling in 7242, the discovery of California by conquistadors in 1542, and, in 2045, the moment at which machine intelligence overtakes human intelligence. The most recent episode, presented at the former ABC Cinema for Liverpool Biennial 2016, reflects on Lewis Fry Richardson’s attempt to build a huge weather-forecast factory with 64,000 women-computers.

The artists’ limited edition photographs show the beginning and end stage of a topological process on which the film structure is based: the turning inside-out of a sphere. The sphere takes the form of a clay ball, similar to those used in Mesopotamia 4000 years ago which are said to mark the origin of computation.

The photographs can be bought individually for £190 each or £350 for both.
